Apartment Therapy highlights 5 kitchen trends according to Pinterest. The highlights are:
White counter tops
Haha! I’m just wrapping up my kitchen renovations. My cupboards are white, the countertop is black, and there are no open shelves. Of course, I’m not typically a fan of trends. Following trends can be fun, but it can also be pricey as it can date your space, and only if you have money to replace your sage green appliances should they be followed.
A couple startled me, a couple not. Frosted or shaded light fixtures. I’m not sure I understand that one. I’m startled to find that granite countertops are out! I was steered towards quartz when I remodeled my kitchen, not from an in or out point of view but from a maintenance point of view. Woodgrain cabinets – that’s not surprising. Open shelving – that was surprising but I can see where that could be a trend. Closed-off kitchens – I’m still a fan of closed-off kitchens in some instances but… Dark paint – not a big fix! Ornate anything – not surprising. Mismatched styles – an interesting one meaning that the kitchen should be in the similar spirit as the rest of the house.
This one is great! You’d like to store something in a ziploc bag but the item is just a bit too big. Well, apartmenttherapy has a solution, take a second bag flip it inside out, and connect the two bags. So basic! So brilliant.
As colour returns to the kitchen, be it gray, blue, or green. HGTV shows us that a white kitchen can have plenty of personality.
I’m still a fan of white or cream as those colours best endure the test of time and enhance the value of your home. As I’ve stated before if you intend on being in your home for the long haul then be personal, otherwise… In the picture above a pop of colour provided by a Persian rug is quite nice.
CBC.ca conducted a survey which found “that more than three-quarters of respondents have had a large household appliance break down, and 75 per cent of those products were said to be 10 years old or less.” It’s a sad state of affairs isn’t it. I’ve often heard it said that these appliances are designed to konk out just after their warranty expires. This corroborates what I’ve heard.
Great backsplash ideas here! As we enter an era of maximalism, style goes over the top. As usual, I am concerned about the lasting power of these styles. If you just bought your home or plan on being there for very long – do what you want. If you’re concerned about the value of your home, it’s resalability, then don’t throw caution to the wind and choose a style that will better endure the test of time.
A few posts ago I was talking about new colour trends for the kitchen. I was also giving words of caution in spending a lot of money on something trendy that gets dated and does not improve your investment. Alternatively, should you want a punch of colour how about a small appliance customized by Dolce & Gabana? There’s some colour!
