Pedestrian Cycling paths Riddled with Potholes
Use caution on the pathways around the Capital. The recent floods submerged our paths under water for extended periods of time. In some instances they have reappered damaged – use caution while cycling on them. As a pedestrian don’t let your smart phone distract you from what’s ahead.
Plus of course, as usual, be aware of the Canadian Geese who have the right of way no mater what speed you are traveling. If you forget this hierarchy of rights they will remind you.
Ottawa Doors Open 2017
June 3 & 4
Yesterday the participants of Doors Open 2017 were announced: it’s quite the list.
I think I’d like to go to the Canada Council Art Bank this year. I’ve never seen the Embassy of Hungary nor the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia, could see those. And oh my neighbours at the Stadacona Hall, the Brunei High Commission are participating – must see that building: I’ll put that as number 1.
I have seen Earscriffe the British High Commissioner’s Official Residence: it’s spectacular. The Embassy of Algeria the Fleck-Paterson House is a must see. One of the rare houses whose interior is designated – a decision made to protect the house from a reckless owner. If you’ve not seen the Diefenbunker – that’s also a must. There’s a restaurant not far from there, you should stop in at Alice’s Village Cafe very funky. Many moons ago I saw the US Embassy that’s quite the building, perhaps not the ideal time to visit, but if you want to remember there are buildings that you must book ahead.
And one last thing take note of whats open Saturday & Sunday vs Saturday or Sunday.

Flooding Potential What To Do
With close to saturated soil the threat of 40-60 cm of rain in the area is not good. If you are in a threatened area DO read this article and be better prepared.
The Dutch Reach
As spring proceeds with uncertain certainty more and more cyclists will take to the road. Cyclists and cars as we know can be a dangerous mix. The city does much to increase the cyclists security but there is something you can do improve the cyclists security. The Dutch Reach. The dutch reach consists of opening your door with your right hand. It forces you to turn your body and better see if there are any cyclists coming by.
Demolition of Yet Another Heritage Property
234 O’Connor Street
There’s a plan – it’s called the Official Plan. But I don’t think it’s worth the paper it’s printed on. The City has no respect for it. Properties are designated heritage, neighbourhoods are designated heritage and then decisions are made according to who has the deepest pockets. It’s a real shame that neighbourhoods that acquired value because of their spirit is having that spirit knocked out of it by a wrecking ball. This time 234 O’Connor Street is the victim.
I’ve seen city officials argue for hours over the merit of a building, of a feature, only to see the building torn down a few weeks later. No mater what is said the wrecking ball wins and our heritage loses.
Sad!
Reigniting Sparks Street
It may not be an impartial writeup but the owners the Riviera Restaurant on Sparks street feel that the reResidences condos and other condo developments along Sparks and close-by will help bring Sparks Street back to like. It would be nice. I quite like that street, always have. But it’s always been under some sort of threat. Admittedly intensification does seem to be working on the downtown core. I’d love to see studies. I’m only in the very centre sporadically but I feel like I see a difference. Bank Street in the evening used to become so quiet now there is life. I love it!
Westgate Shopping Centre
Someday soon we’ll have a lot of neighbours. That’s us beyond the proposed tower to the left, we’re in between the ramp and the 417.
The city has approved the redevelopment of Westgate Shopping Centre from a strip mall which has evolved since its creation in 1955 to a 5 tower complex which will include 8230 square meters of commercial space and 1146 of residential units above.
This will happen in 3 phases. The first two phases, taking the next 10 years, the demolition of the actual and the construction of the 2 first towers and subsequent to that the construction of the other 3 towers bringing the total to 5. I read 24 storeys for the first 2 but approval for 22 and the remaining 3 are one 24 and two 36.
Now here’s something I don’t understand as we pursue the intensification plan. Every here and there 2 lanes are narrowed to 1 near intersections via the creation of an extension to the sidewalk. Hum…
Ottawa Repair Cafe
April 8, 2017
The Ottawa Repair Cafe will be held April 8, 2017 at the Ottawa Tool Library 250 City Centre Avenue Unit 216. My hope is that ultimately Ottawa has a full time repair.
Isn’t it something that City Centre is now an in spot. And it only took 50 years! One must off course credit Art is In.
