Spring Forward!

March 13, 2021 by Claude Jobin

It’s that time of year again; Sunday morning at 2 a.m. move your clock forward an hour. Then there was the time I had no wall clocks or watches, my computer and phone changed times on their own, and it took me a few days to realize we had changed time…

I read that a bill has passed legislation in the fall making daylight savings time permanent. Details to be finalized, and once that’s done perhaps we can do away with this obsolete practice. Well, until then, for a few days your body may take a moment to adjust.

15 Ways to Stay Busy this Winter

February 22, 2021 by Claude Jobin

In my mind, this article from Living within Realtor.ca seems a bit late and you may appreciate some points more than others but as we approach the end of February the end of winter may be getting closer and yet… And yet we may need a little boost to make it to spring.

The holidays have come and gone, and the novelty of a new year has worn off—February is officially here. While it might be the shortest month of the year, it always feels like the longest.

Motivation can be hard to come by when the amount of sunlight is minimal at best, but there are plenty of tasks, activities, and projects you can tackle to keep you busy, productive, and healthy until spring.

If you’re trying to beat the winter “blahs” try one of the activities below to stay busy!

1. Write out a meal plan.

Put those bookmarked recipes to good use and come up with a tasty dinner plan. Meal plans can help spark creativity in the kitchen. Create a weekly shopping list based on your selected recipes so you’ll have all the ingredients at the ready. You’ll feel organized, prepared, and confident when your family asks, “what’s for dinner?”

2. Declutter and organize.

With the rush of the holidays and the bustle of the new year, chances are there’s still some tidying and organizing that needs to happen around your home. Clutter and mess lead to stress, so getting rid of old or unwanted items can clear your space and make you more relaxed. Box up old toys or books. Toss all those socks with holes in them. Anything that’s still in good condition but just not needed in your home can be taken to a local Goodwill, shelter, food bank, or other community outreach program. You’ll be surprised how much lighter and happier you’ll feel!

3. Paint a wall.

Staring at the same four walls for months can leave you itching for a change of scenery, so why not mix things up with a can of paint? Lighten up a dark space by painting it white. Create drama in a room by going dark. Go bold in your living space with a vibrant feature wall. A simple can of paint is an inexpensive and easy way to make a big impact on your space.

4. Plant an indoor herb garden.

There’s nothing like adding fresh herbs to your meals; they boost flavour, add colour, and contain a variety of nutrients. Planting a herb garden is an excellent way to ensure you have access to fresh herbs year-round. So, forget those grocery store herbs, grab an indoor growing kit, and start your countertop garden today.

5. Enjoy an at-home spa day.

Gather the bubble bath, candles, mud-masks, and calming music for an at-home spa day. Set aside a few hours to relax and pamper yourself. Give yourself a facial, manicure, pedicure, or partake in any other type of personal maintenance you might have been putting off. This one small act of self-care can be extremely rewarding.

6. Try a small DIY.

There is no lack of easy and quick DIY projects on the internet, so why not give one a try! From the terracotta paint hack to shibori, experiment with several small DIY projects to discover one that you love.

7. Swap your lightbulbs.

Did you know new, energy-efficient LEDs only use 20%–25% of the energy and can last 15-25 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs? It’s worth the investment to make the switch, which will save you hundreds over the lifetime of the bulbs.

8. Redecorate for winter.

Winter’s harsh weather conditions can leave you craving warmth, coziness, and comfort; decorating your space with these five must-have décor items will transform your space giving it that sought-after cozy vibe.

9. Stay active.

With winter in full swing and snow up to your knees, it can be hard to get outside for the prescribed 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Setting up a small work-out area in your home can keep you motivated and focused on your goals. If you need workout ideas or inspiration, there are thousands of free and paid workout videos online.

10. Have a movie night.

Grab the snacks, pop some popcorn, and gather the family–it’s movie night! If your family has a hard time agreeing on a movie, put everyone’s selection in a hat and draw a title, it keeps it fair and square!

11. Do some good for others.

We can all agree, February is a hard month for everybody. Bring a smile to someone’s face with an act of kindness. It can be as simple as paying for the person behind you in the drive-through or shoveling your neighbour’s driveway. You’ll feel good, they’ll feel good–it’s a win, win!

12. Make a reno list.

Keeping a mental list of all your home renovations? Get all those ideas out of your head and down on paper! Details like budget, timeline, and materials can help you prioritize and map out your plan of attack.

13. Plan something to look forward to.

While travelling to a tropical island might be off the table for now, planning a trip, event, or special activity will give you something to look forward to.

14. Deep clean.

If your home is looking a little dusty it might be time for a deep clean. Tidy up rooms, remove clutter, vacuum, dust, and wipe down surfaces with a multi-purpose cleaner. If it has truly been a while since you last cleaned, it also might be time to disinfect

15. Mend your clothes.

Sew that button back on your blouse or hem those pants that are too long. You’ll thank yourself later. We’re confident these 16 ways to stay busy will help you beat the winter blahs and bring joy to your life. How do you stay busy in the dreary winter month? Tell us in the comments section below.

16. Binge-watch a new show.

If you subscribe to a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime you have access to thousands of new (or old) shows that are ready for bingeing. From home décor before-and-after shows to classics like Friends, there are lots of options to keep you busy.

Unique Large-scale Snow Art

February 8, 2021 by Claude Jobin

It’s Monday, it’s cold, and we’re almost 1 year into this pandemic. So to distract us, if only for a moment, I thought I’d share a link to an article from the cbc.ca website which shows the beautiful patterns created in the snow, shall we call it snowshoe art, done by Kim Asmussen of Schreiber, Ontario. Art and a workout! Very cool! The link includes a video! Enjoy!

How Do You Imagine Ottawa’s Downtown After COVID-19?

February 1, 2021 by Claude Jobin

Ten months later it really is hard to imagine what life will be like after this is done. It’s sometimes even hard to imagine that this will end. CBC.ca consulted with an urban planner, an architect, and geographers to hear their perspective on what Ottawa’s downtown core would look like post-COVID-19.

One sees fewer cubicles and more mixed-use spaces, as well as green spaces. Another suggests mixed-use spaces. Spaces that function one way during a certain time and have another function past that time. And finally one suggests improved transit and low-cost or even free parking. Read the whole article here.

A Look at the Virtual Home-Buying Experience

January 18, 2021 by Claude Jobin

Today I share an article from Realtor.ca. With today’s modern technology coupled with the social climate surrounding the pandemic, many changes have taken place to facilitate conducting both our business and personal lives virtually. A few years ago it would seem outlandish to buy a new home virtually, but that is exactly what Warren and Brent did when they decided to move with their dogs from Ottawa to the other side of the country. How did they do it? Let’s find out!

A long-term plan

Warren and Brent had been working on their 10-year retirement plan, which, at the time, involved the purchase of a home in Florida and an intention to split their time between the US and Ottawa until finally retiring and settling in Canada’s West Coast. For years they watched the housing market in Florida, waiting for the right time to buy.

Ontario Stay-at-home Order

January 14, 2021 by Claude Jobin

Let me first start by saying stay well, stay safe.

During these challenging times real estate continues to be an essential service.

Showings can still happen, but buyers are to first look at all photos, and available virtual tours to confirm the suitability of the property. They should familiarize themselves with the area where the property is located to be sure it meets their needs and desires. Once suitability has been established an appointment can be set. During the appointment, masks will be worn, hands sanitized prior to entering the property, and there will be minimum touching. Offers can be done by means of electronic signature from the comfort of your own home.

Coping with COVID

December 27, 2020 by Claude Jobin

An omission was made in the January newsletter: not featuring 502-1510 Riverside Drive. Please click here for details of that listing.

On December 21st the Government of Ontario issued a province-wide shutdown which took effect on boxing day. It contains so many restrictions a cheat sheet is needed to know what is and what is not allowed. A result of these measures can be loneliness. CBC.ca proposes coping mechanisms to help you deal with loneliness during the lockdown. Loneliness is recognized as a health risk that must be addressed – recognize the symptoms, familiarize yourself with the antidote – don’t do this alone.

Claude and Molly are truly amazing!

I live very far out of town and needed an Ottawa real estate agent after my father died.
I picked them after looking online.

Well I picked the right ones! They were and are extraordinary. Because I live so far away our family needs for cleaning the house out and getting it ready to sell were huge, and to me, insurmountable.

I couldn't have done it without them, and to top this off, they are friendly and just great people. Thank you so much Claude and Molly.

All the best, Rachel

You’re fantastic!

Allan

A huge Thank YOU

You did a yeoman's service with helping us find and buy our house.
We are so grateful for your insights and patience.
It was a big learning curve (and I am still trying to figure out why milk is in a bag . . .) I look forward to hanging out, I mean possibly working with you when I arrive here full time;-) In the meantime, thank you again from us both. Arica and Eric

Fortunate indeed to have met Molly Hoyle

Over the past couple of weeks we were very fortunate indeed to have met Molly Hoyle.
We were selling our home and Molly brought her client to view it knowing it would be a home that they would be interested in....which by the way they were as they did end up purchasing. It was our fortunate luck that we met Molly through this endeavour. My husband and I were selling our house with Grapevine and as we are not experienced sellers there were a few times we were very close to just taking it off the market and staying here. Her experience, knowledge, kindness to us, her understanding that this was a difficult decision especially for my husband made the whole difference for us. Molly's professionalism and expertise, her ability to 'walk a fine line' while working for her client and yet to be so kind and gentle with us was amazing. We feel the whole experience gave us the opportunity to meet and talk with Molly and to value her knowledge. You can be assured that we will highly recommend her to any of our friends who need a conscientious, honest, trustworthy realtor. Sadly we will miss talking with Molly but we only wish her the very best in the future and say 'thank you Molly' for all her help and support. Sincerely, Lenore and Ralph

I really appreciate your hard work,

I will refer you and Molly to friends and family if they are looking to sell. Yana
